Policy Statement

Regenerate Mentoring is committed to safeguarding children, young people and adults from all forms of exploitation, including radicalisation and extremism.

We recognise our statutory duty under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 (Section 26) to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.”
Our approach is one of early intervention, education and support — never discrimination or criminalisation.

This policy forms part of our wider safeguarding framework and applies to all staff, mentors, volunteers and contractors.

Legal and Policy Framework

This policy is guided by:

Aims

  • To protect children, young people and adults from radicalisation and extremist influences.

  • To identify and respond swiftly to concerns linked to radicalisation.

  • To provide staff and mentors with the knowledge and confidence to recognise and report indicators of concern.

  • To promote British values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect and individual liberty.

  • To ensure effective partnership working with local Prevent and safeguarding teams.

Definitions

  • Extremism: Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

  • Radicalisation: The process by which a person comes to support terrorism or extremist ideologies.

  • Terrorism: The use or threat of action designed to influence the government or intimidate the public to advance a political, religious or ideological cause.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • DSL: Jonny Doidge

  • Deputy DSL: Amy Doidge

  • All Staff and Mentors: Must complete Prevent training and report any concerns about radicalisation or extremist behaviour immediately.

  • Senior Leadership Team: Ensures compliance with the Prevent Duty and monitors training, referrals and outcomes.

Recognising Signs of Radicalisation

Possible indicators include (but are not limited to):

  • Isolation from family, friends or mainstream activities.

  • Expression of extremist views or intolerance towards others.

  • Possession or sharing of extremist material online or in person.

  • Sudden change in behaviour, appearance or peer group.

  • Fixation on particular ideologies, grievances or conspiracies.

Staff and mentors must remember that these signs may also indicate other safeguarding concerns and should be approached sensitively.

Procedures for Reporting Concerns

  1. Any concerns about radicalisation or extremist influence must be reported immediately to the DSL (Jonny Doidge) or Deputy DSL (Amy Doidge).
  2. The DSL will assess the concern, gather information and, where appropriate, make a referral to the Local Authority Prevent Team or Channel Programme.
  3. All referrals will be handled in line with confidentiality, proportionality and safeguarding principles.
  4. Urgent concerns posing immediate danger should be reported to the police via 999.

Partnership Working

Regenerate Mentoring works closely with:

  • Local Authority Prevent and Safeguarding Teams

  • Police and Channel Coordinators

  • Schools, colleges and other education providers

  • Community and voluntary sector partners

This multi-agency approach ensures early identification and effective intervention.

Training and Awareness

  • All staff and mentors complete Prevent Awareness Training as part of induction.

  • Refresher training is provided every two years.

  • The DSL and Deputy DSL undertake advanced training to manage referrals and liaise with external agencies.

Promoting British Values

British values are embedded within all mentoring and educational activities by encouraging:

  • Respect for individual differences and beliefs.

  • Positive discussions about culture, community and diversity.

  • Critical thinking and open dialogue about sensitive issues.

  • Empowering young people to question information and think independently.

The DSL monitors all Prevent-related incidents, training completion and referrals.
This policy is reviewed annually, or sooner if government guidance changes.
